5.5.1 Dative Bond

  1. A dative bond or coordinate bond is a type of covalent bond where the electron pair that is shared comes from one atom only.
    1. Formation of dative bond in hydroxonium ion, \(H _3 O ^{+}\)
    2. Formation of dative bond in ammonium ion, \(NH _4^{+}\)
  2. Usually a covalent bond involves two atoms. Each atom contributes one electron for the sharing.
  3. However, in a dative bond, both shared electrons come from one atom only. The other atom does not contribute any electrons.
