5.6.1 Application of Green Technology in industrial waste management

  1. Green Technology is a technology or application developed to minimise the negative effects of harmful human activities.
  2. Landfill is the common method used in solid waste management.
  3. Landfill leachate refers to the highly contaminated liquid that is drained from landfill sites by rainwater.
  4. Green Technology provides treatment solutions for landfill leachate as well as industrial and agriculture wastewater before they are released into the environment.

Landfill Leachate Treatment

  • A layer of thick plastic fixed at bottom of the landfill site to prevent the leachate from diffuses into the soil.
  • Leachate collection pipe system carries leachate to a leachate collection pond.
  • The microorganisms breakdown the organic matter with aerobic respiration then produce activated sludge.
  • The heavy metals are separated through electrolysis of waste water.

The bacteria breakdown the trash in the absent of oxygen to produce landfill gas ( \(50 \%\) methane and \(50 \%\) carbon dioxide)

The methane gas is extracted from landfill gas and used to generate electricity.

Wastewater Treatment

Industrial and agriculture wastewater are discarded into collection pipe system that carries wastewater to a collection pond.

  • The microorganisms breakdown the organic matter with aerobic respiration then produce activated sludge.
  • The heavy metals are separated through electrolysis of waste water.

The sludge is rich in organic matter can be used as organic fertilisers in agriculture.

The Importance of Green Technology in Life

  1. Cleaner source of energy
  2. More effective waste management
  3. Improving standards of living
  4. Spearheading innovation
  5. Mitigating global warming
